Australians will finally be able to travel to New Zealand without requiring to quarantine, with an exact date to be announced in the new year.

It’s been a long wait, with more than a few hiccups, but we’re finally getting a two-way travel bubble with New Zealand in the new year. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed the news at a post-cabinet press conference earlier today.

“It is our intention to name a date … in the New Year, once remaining details are locked down,” Ardern said, as reported by Stuff NZ.

New Zealanders have been able to enter Australia quarantine-free since October but under the current arrangement, Australians cannot enter New Zealand without undergoing a mandatory 14-day stay in hotel quarantine.

This in principle commitment from the New Zealand government towards opening up is welcome news to people on both sides of the Tasman. And although a date for the reopening hasn’t yet been announced, it’s worth starting your trip planning now. Because when those borders do reopen, things will book out fast.
