What’s on around town

• Cornersmith, the community-minded, sustainability-focused Annandale cafe that announced its closure last month, has revealed its final full day of trade: March 5. For the rest of next week, it’ll be open with a reduced menu (and hours), until the curtains close for good.

• Stickybeak Festival is back for another year, running from Friday March 8 to the evening of Saturday March 9. Come to the National Art School for FBi Radio-curated tunes, copious wines from P&V, as well as drinks and bites from some of Sydney’s best – Bar Copains, Double Deuce Lounge, King Clarence, Tucano’s and Mapo Gelato, to name a few. A $25 ticket gets you entry and a boozy goodie bag.

• North-side caffeine dealer Barrel One has just released a coffee concentrate – the perfect addition to coffee cocktails (Kahlua, be warned). You can try it out in an Espresso Martini over at Busta in Manly.

• The Rocks continues its cool rebrand with the return of George Street Food Gallery and its al fresco dining space tomorrow. The plan is for a medley of pop-ups to serve the space. This weekend, you’ll find food from Kepos Street Kitchen, Carriageworks favourite Bird & Ewe, and Chat Thai’s Love Child.

• Summer might be over, but Gin Lane’s beach-themed cocktail line-up is still here. Come for a trio of cocktails inspired by some of the world’s most iconic beaches and coastal locales – Waikiki, Manly and Positano – all anchored by Gin Lane’s favourite spirit (gin).

International Women’s Day Events

• Join chef Danielle Alvarez and 16 trailblazing winemakers for a wine tasting (and snack-board grazing) in the Yallamundi Rooms of the Opera House. Hosted by Trippas White’s group sommelier Louella Matthews, this will be one to remember.

• Bar Lucia is running a special International Woman’s Day menu on March 8, by Esmeralda Perez, Milpa Collective’s culinary director. It’s inspired by the films of Penelope Cruz – an icon (who delivered the only redeeming performance in Ferrari). Bookings are open now.

• Over in Penrith, the Log Cabin is throwing a lunch, catered by head chef Lauren McKenna, featuring a panel of guest speakers including Olympic gold medallist Annabelle McIntrye.

• Lil Sis and its owners Solotel are celebrating International Women’s Day with a weekend of eating and drinking. There’ll be a $55 set menu, as well as a bespoke list of wines by the glass, to enjoy over the two days.

• On March 9, Public House Petersham is hosting Women in Wine in honour of International Women’s Day. You’ll be able to try a bunch of wines, and also enjoy a host of women-led panels covering the wine industry. Tickets available here.

• Headed Canberra way next weekend? Check out QT’s Uncorked dinner. It’s three courses, paired with wines by sommelier Ashleigh Smith, with a particular spotlight on the capital territory’s vineyards (and the women who work them).

• Woollahra’s Chiswick is hosting a long lunch in partnership with Two Good Co and Veuve Clicquot. $25 from each ticket will go towards Two Good Co, and guests can expect a three-course menu as well as a panel discussion featuring Deborah Knight, Zara Seidler and Kyle Westgarth, Two Good Co’s general manager.

• Roving dinner pop-up Babs is collaborating with Alexandria's UNO Studio. Creative Odyssey, a content series focused on the International Women's Day theme "Count her in, invest in women", launches on Friday March 8. It will culminate with a panel discussion on Wednesday March 27, where there'll be all the best Babs snacks (think signature challah buns and pickled sardines, plus female-powered wines), too. Keep a watch on Instagram for tickets.

What we covered this week

Tita Carinderia is dedicated to Filipino-style breakfasts. And while bibingka (baked rice cake), ube soft serves and silogs are all worth your time, it’s hard to take your eyes off the weekend-only breakfast sandwiches – stuffed with your choice of Spam, longanisa (sweet sausage), and hash browns.

• Frozen yoghurt is having a second wind, and Freo – helmed by Lumi and Lode’s Federico Zanellato – is part of the latest wave. Head over to Bathurst Street to get in on the action.

• Blockbuster Carlton bakery Self Raised has just opened Snack Shoppe in Bexley North. Come to this handsome milk-bar-evoking takeaway window for excellent baked goods and sandwiches.

• When it’s this hot and muggy, few meals go down as well as ceviche. Lima, from the team behind Surry Hills’ Warike, is here to give you the goods. Come for ceviche, tiraditos and causas – and of course, plenty of pisco.
