Old industrial buildings are notoriously difficult to convert, but Janie Kammer and Alanna Crowe decided to do just that.

The idea to start a cafe and creative space sparked while the pair was working together at The Corner Store in Dulwich. “We only worked together for a short time, but worked really well as a team and always had the same ideas,” Kammer says.

“The cafe idea came first, then adding the creative spaces followed naturally. We recognised there was a need for collective artist studios in Adelaide through talking with friends and family.”

The next step was to search for a building. “We were looking for a space for about six months and really loved this one as soon as we walked in. It already had the separated areas for the cafe and the artist studios,” Kammer says.

Under the banner of Karma and Crow (a playful take on their surnames) the pair has set up just west of the CBD on Richmond Road.

The site has a total of nine studio spaces alongside a communal area where workshops will be held. The studios are enclosed for privacy but are filled with natural light from the huge front windows and skylights.

The cafe will house a large island coffee bar and ample seating. A full kitchen will serve brunch and lunch. The menu hasn’t yet been revealed but coffee will be supplied by boutique roaster Elementary. Bike racks will be available for riders and dogs will be welcomed.

The launch date is September 28 and some of the artist spaces have already been filled. Local artist Ellie Kammer will be among the mix with more to come as the building nears completion.
