There’s a procession of local art projects paying homage to the Man Who Fell to Earth this month, including exhibitions and a workshop for budding painters to create their own Bowie piece.
One lasting legacy is from artist Lisa King, who was commissioned to create an 11-metre-tall mural on the side of the pub as part of Adelaide Fringe 2016’s Street Art Explosion. “It was nice to be given that wall because it hadn’t been painted recently,” she says.
King and her artist mates – such as London-based Jimmy C, who did the Aladdin Sane mural in Brixton – were inspired by his music. “We’d get together on weekends, drink beers and would often listen to Bowie for eight hours,” says King. It took her nine days to paint her own Bowie mural. “There weren’t any here at the time, so it wasn’t jumping on the bandwagon,” she says. “I thought it’d be really cool.”

For creative types wanting to whip up their own tribute, there’s a Bowie portrait-painting workshop at Splashout Art Studios in Marino on March 19. Studio manager Jenny Tuck explains, “Cat Leonard and Krystyna Ciesiolkiewicz will help artists create their own large, personal Bowie tribute on large canvases. Why? Because David mattered."
Music, video clips, wine and food will accompany the art class. All proceeds go to Cancer Care.
