In the heart of Adelaide’s West End there’s a bar with a nautical link, but Clever Little Tailor is no ocean-themed watering hole. Founding partner Dana Whyte worked tirelessly on the visual elements (including the stylish timber façade and leather-clad mezzanine booths) with his father, a carpenter and retired boat builder. It’s these little touches that leverage the bar above the competition.

The name was thought up in an “Oh crap, what do we call it?” moment by Whyte, who co-owns the venue with Marshall King and Henry Holland (the trio are also behind Pink Moon Saloon around the corner). The local masses refer to this place affectionately as Clevers or CLT, but just about any name that adds to the whole Cheers vibe – local, small, convivial – is welcomed.

Like any wine bar worth its grapes, CLT offers a dynamic selection of local and international pours. The offering changes weekly, but it’s always full of quality options ranging from classic benchmark styles to the minimal intervention set. A Coravin device behind the bar makes the pricier top shelf accessible by the glass.

Outside of wine and beer, the experienced staff will whip up any cocktail you desire. Whisky is also a major focus – an extensive range has been sourced from inspired trips to Tasmania, USA, Japan and Europe.

To eat, there’s a modest selection of grazing fare to partner with your drink. Think market cheese and charcuterie sliced to order.
