Jonny Pisanelli loves pastries so much, he has a tattoo of a sfogliatelle. The strudel-like Italian pastry is his favourite, equal with the croissant. His bakery, Abbots and Kinney, is a story in itself.

Inspired by a trip to LA, Pisanelli discovered the story of Abbot Kinney, who turned a swampland into what’s now known as Venice Beach. For Pisanelli, “Abbots” signifies a respect for tradition with pastries and food, while “Kinney” inspires the use of modern techniques to bring fun new twists to the classics.

This is reflected in the cheeky names of savouries such as the Nasty Pasty and the Mark Prosciutto. The sweet options – cronuts, tarts, croissants and more – speak for themselves. There's also full-service breakfast menu featuring chia pudding, avo toast and egg dishes.

It’s a handy spot for the work crowd to get quick savoury sandwiches and rolls at lunchtime, or one of the famed sweet offerings, which are all made fresh every morning. The baked offerings are complemented by D’Angelo coffee, and there’s an option for door-to-door delivery if you can’t leave your desk.

Despite many other places around town selling Abbots and Kinney pastries, the home base on Pirie Street is a pretty great place to come for your fix of Pisanelli’s danwiches – a hybrid Danish/sandwich creation – and a sfogliatelle, of course.
