Teresa Palmer has never forgotten where she came from. She had star turns in local projects such as Ride Like a Girl and The Clearing and international productions such as Hacksaw Ridge, I Am Number Four, Warm Bodies and A Discovery of Witches.
Palmer, her husband – actor and director Mark Webber – and their five children split their time between Adelaide and Hollywood, but she always tries to be home for Fringe. She spoke to Broadsheet about what she loves about this time of year and the local spots she can’t get enough of.
What’s something you miss about South Australia when you’re away?
The beaches! There’s nothing like a Port Willunga sunset. And the easygoing, down-to-earth vibe. Adelaide always feels like home.
What are some of your favourite memories of growing up in Adelaide?
Riding my bike around the neighbourhood, going to Semaphore Beach with my nanna, and spending hours at Marion Shopping Centre with my friends, feeling very grown up! I also loved going to the Mainline Drive-In at Gepps Cross and hitting up the old-school Dazzleland in the Myer Centre. Those were the best of days.
You’re a mum of five. Do you have a favourite family activity in Adelaide?
Spending the day at the beach and then enjoying a vegan meal at a local cafe. Recently we’ve been enjoying the kitty cafe Meow Me on Glen Osmond Road. All the cats are adoptable. It’s super sweet and always a hit with the kids.
What’s your favourite thing about being in Adelaide during Fringe season?
The energy! The whole city comes alive. There’s always something happening, and you never know what weird and wonderful show you’ll stumble into. The city is electric come Fringe time – the buzz is palpable. It’s my favourite time of year to show off my city to interstate and overseas friends.
Are there any Fringe events you’re particularly looking forward to?
Anything immersive or unexpected! I love seeing what fresh talent is coming through – it’s always a mix of hilarious, moving, and totally bizarre. I’m particularly excited to see Outside In and Michelle Brasier’s It's A Shame We Won’t Be Friends Next Year. I also can’t wait to see my husband Mark Webber perform in You Are Going To Die.
You’re a vegan. Where’s the best spot in town to get vegan food?
Some of my favourites are Veggie Vie and Staazi and Co for incredible vegan flavours. The Lost Deli which is now closed, was also a favourite.
Is there a movie or TV show that always makes you think of Adelaide?
So many! Wolf Creek because I was an extra in that movie, and it was shot entirely in SA. I remember filming my pool party scene at a hotel on Glen Osmond Road back in the day. And Storm Boy, it captures the heart of SA and is such an iconic South Australian darling.
Where’s your favourite date night spot in Adelaide?
Allegra. It’s an incredible vegan fine dining experience with beautiful food, amazing flavours, and such a special atmosphere.
What are your favourite spots to eat and drink in Adelaide?
Press for an amazing meal, Africola for something fun and vibrant, and once again, the world class Allegra for something very special.
If one of your friends was coming to Adelaide for the first time, what would you recommend they do?
Spend the morning at the Adelaide Central Market, then head to McLaren Vale for wine tasting, stop by Port Willunga for a swim, and then end the day with dinner on Peel Street. That’s the perfect Adelaide day!
