The Australia-wide closure of American Apparel was a blow for blank-clothing lovers, but there’s now a new place to buy basics on Rundle Street.
It has stores in Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast, and now New Zealand label AS Colour has set up in Adelaide. It sells reasonably priced, ethically produced basics for men and women.
“Our production standards are higher than most in our market,” says Adrian Duff, AS Colour’s art director. The company is committed to humane working conditions and recently went through the rigorous process of obtaining a child-labour-free accreditation. “We don’t do fast fashion,” Duff says. “We just make really simple, good-quality stuff.”
The sleek, split-level store on Rundle Street features bleached-oak flooring; tiled feature walls; and perforated, powder-coated shelving. Duff says it is “one of the only [AS Colour] stores with everything in it”. Its line of around 120 products features tees, shirts, jackets, hats and bags in a range of colours.
AS Colour also runs an annual T-shirt-design competition and online store – The Little Help Project – to help out up-and-coming creatives.
