Hindley Street’s Format will host two of Adelaide’s most luxurious vintage-fashion collections – from Belinda Humphris (Claire Inc) and Christopher Arblaster (Filter Store) – for a huge fashion sale.
A Salvo’s bargain bin this is not. Humphris’s and Arblaster’s collections are curated to celebrate enduring style. “We both buy clothes that are quite current even though they’re vintage,” says Humphris. “It will be quite a contemporary collection for a ‘vintage’ show.”
It’s the first time the two have been showcased together. “We both do similar, but slightly different things,” Humphris explains. “Chris has lots of stuff by minimalist Japanese designers. Mine is a bit more eclectic … a bit more outrageous.”
The 150–200 piece wardrobe features garments from Maison Margiela, Comme Des Garcons, Issey Miyake, Junya Watanabe, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Franco Moschino, Karl Lagerfeld and more.
“We look at [fashion] in an art kind of way,” says Humphris. “Like an antique car. It should be preserved. You can see a lot of the origins of design when you’re looking at a piece made 20 to 30 years ago. Back then it was made better.” Many labels in the two collections were never sold new in Adelaide. “It’s quite a rare thing,” Humphris says.
With Format wrapping up soon, Humphris and Arblaster were given the chance to collaborate on a short-term pop-up as extensions of their individual online stores.
The event will also include a screening on Thursday night – once the tills are closed. Arblaster will show a selection of vintage runway videos from his private archive. “Chris has an amazing collection of videos from Maison Martin Margiela – runway shows and collections,” Humphris says.
Humphris has spent years stockpiling vintage treasures. She travels, whenever possible, to source her unique pieces. When at home in Adelaide, she spends hours trawling the internet for garments. “These days I have suppliers hitting me up, because they know what I like,” she says. And she knows what sells.
The sale starts on Wednesday November 1 and runs until Saturday November 4.
