An All-Day Garden Party and Sunny’s “Invasion” at Roxie’s

Pizza, mojitos and a live set from a Ghanaian dance enigma.

Last February Sunny’s Pizza hosted LA mix master Awesome Tapes From Africa. He reissued Ghanaian artist Ata Kak’s leftfield mid-’90s cassette Obaa Sima in 2015, to worldwide acclaim – some 20 years after its minuscule first run.

On Ata Kak’s first international tour since the reissue, he’s performing live (with a full band) at Chateau Apollo on Monday March 12 alongside an all-day garden party at Roxie’s, with a kitchen takeover by Sunny’s.

Joining a weekend of world sounds at Womadelaide, Ata Kak brings what Sunny’s co-owner Ash Wilson calls “African-infused house music with almost hip-hop vocals”. DJ Jimmy Trash and Xanga will support him in the Chateau. A line-up of local DJs will play in the garden.

It’s billed as a Sunny’s “invasion” but both venues’ chefs have put their heads together. There’ll be three pizzas (a margherita, a souped-up pepperoni with ‘nduja and a four cheese) and three “not pizzas” (a taleggio toastie, a Caprese salad and a pickled-tomato-topped beef crudo). Leave room for wood-fired peaches and cream.

Expect “heaps of rum-based drinks”, says Wilson. That includes a few cold-pressed-juice mojitos. Or keep it simple with Young Henrys pints for a fiver all day.

Ata Kak (Live) + Roxie’s All-Day Garden Party + Sunny’s Pizza Invasion is on Monday March 12 at Chateau Apollo and Roxie’s from 1pm. Check out the Facebook event for more details and tickets.
