Stepney’s Little Bang Brewing Company is moving … down the road.
“Every time we brew at the moment we take over the entire space,” says co-owner Ryan Davidson. “We have to cram everything back in the brewhouse … to open to the public.”
A mate overheard his and head brewer Filip Kemp’s frustrations (“we’re not usually quiet when we’re frustrated”, Davidson says) and mentioned a 1000-square-metre Stepney warehouse he came across while looking for office space. They jumped at the opportunity. “[Stepney] is our spiritual home,” says Davidson.
Little Bang’s soon-to-be new digs are around five times the size of its three-year-old predecessor on Union Street. Naturally, production will expand. “We’re routinely running out of beer,” says Davidson. Output sits at roughly 100,000 litres a year. “Hopefully we’ll be able to get close to doubling that in the year after we move in,” he says.
You’ll still have front-row seats to the brewing process. “The theatre of having the tanks there will be even more profound because we’ll actually be able to use them at the same time as being open,” Davidson says.
Expect more space to get comfortable in the cellar door, more taps (“I’d actually like to pour some other local breweries’ beers,” Davidson says), an area for functions and events and a beer garden.
Increased square-meterage will also allow for a canning line (packaging is currently done off-site), cold storage and a greater capacity for contract brewing.
