On foot, Melbourne Street in North Adelaide is a long way from Adelaide Central Market. Much too far to walk with two loaded shopping bags, anyway.
Enter Chris Cafcakis, who runs a market garden named Herby Fresh Fruit and Veg with his family. “There wasn’t much produce around Melbourne Street or the North Adelaide area,” he says. “So I thought, ‘a market would be great there.’”
There’ll be events every Sunday in April, starting this week, at E For Ethel’s carpark.
In addition to his own products, Cafcakis has enlisted the help of growers in the Adelaide Hills and other nearby regions. “We’re skipping the middleman. We’re going straight to the farms,” he says.
Expect to find free-range eggs, herbs, beautiful cherry and roma tomatoes, plus other fresh vegetables. There will also be face-painting for kids, and a DJ to keep the mood light.
One thing Cafcakis hasn’t organised is readymade food. “We want to support the local cafes. There’s UR Caffe across the road, and E For Ethel,” he says. “After you’ve done your shopping you can go and have a great feed.”
Melbourne Street Market will be held from 8am to 1pm, every Sunday in April at 116 Melbourne Street, North Adelaide.
