Food and coffee seekers once had little reason to stop on King William Street in Kent Town. Then cafe Rustic Gourmet and pizza and wine bar Pan & Vine opened on the ground floor of the Verde apartment building. Now a new coffee shop, Octeine, has moved into a warehouse across the road. It shares the space with gym V2 Fit and a physio.
Owner Pete Mann, a former teacher, spent last year bouncing between De Groot Coffee Co at Port Elliot and Seafaring Fools at Glenelg South, where he learned coffee roasting and making, respectively. He was soon roasting his own coffee under the Octeine label, and supplying acai bar Bomdia Bowls at Glenelg.
While he’s currently contract roasting at Coffee World in Welland, his plan is to eventually open a two-in-one roastery and cafe. In the meantime at his first shopfront there’s a seasonal blend for milk coffees and a few rotating single origins. Takeaway beans are available in bags or reusable, waste-conscious tins. “You come back with the same tin and I’ll give you a discount,” Mann says.
Fleurieu Milk is the standard, but he has at least two variations of every milk alternative (including Happy Happy Soy Boy). There’s also cold-pressed juice from Juice Institute.
The small and simple menu includes acai bowls, granola, and Abbots & Kinney sourdough toast loaded with smashed avocado, crumbed fetta, chilli and dukkah; tomato, cream cheese, basil and balsamic; and peanut butter with banana and honey or strawberry jam. Plus health-conscious sweets from Protein Balls ADL and Raw Bliss and not-so-health-conscious pastries from Abbots & Kinney and Portuguese tarts from Saudade.
Importantly, this establishment is doggo-friendly. “They’re allowed anywhere,” says Mann.
