What on earth is happening to Adelaide’s hospitality scene?
A year that has already claimed Brid, Lost in a Forrest, The Summertown Aristologist, long-running Prospect cafe Komodo, Big Shed Brewing, My Lover Cindi and Gang Gang’s Parkside location, has claimed another victim. Gilles Street coffee shop Paddy Barry’s – formerly known as Sibling – has announced it will close this year.
“After three incredible years, it brings sadness and relief to say we’re shutting our doors in the coming months,” owner Jimmy Barry wrote in a statement posted to Instagram over the weekend. “A decision that wasn’t easy to make. Ultimately, family comes first and I want to be the best dad, partner, son, brother and friend I possibly can. With the pressure of small business, I’m finding it hard to be present.”
On the edge of Adelaide city, the cafe became a second home for many of its regulars and developed a reputation for serving some of Adelaide’s best filter brews. The food menu was nourishing and moreish with bagels (baked on-site by former Sibling chef and Holy Mother of Bagels founder Aaron Caporn), killer toasties and hearty salads.
The cafe’s Instagram post wrapped up with a call to action, imploring regulars to “come get your fix (cauliflower toastie) while you still can”.
