When it comes to sourcing ingredients, you can’t get more local than your backyard. So says Michelle Campbell, owner of Five Little Figs. The former teacher brought her theory to life in mid-2013, rewarding cafe-goers with healthy, wholesome fare.

Take the towering French toast – it’s topped with stewed apricots from the cafe’s fruit trees. There’s a veggie patch and a flock of chickens out the back. For other fresh produce she’ll turn to suppliers such as Rohde’s Free Range Eggs, Marriott Meat and Fleurieu Milk Company.

You won’t find sugar-packed drinks or deep-fried anything on the menu, just wholesome, organic, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. Kids can choose from dippy eggs, toasted sandwiches or grazing plates; the latter served with a glass of Adelaide Hills apple juice. Offerings change with the seasons and what’s growing in the backyard. Even table scraps aren’t wasted; they’re fed to the chickens or composted.

Cosy tables and comfy couches abound indoors, while local Adelaide artwork brightens the walls. Alternatively, opt for a seat outside and grab a dose of fresh air and sunshine with your order.

Campbell has been with Windsor Gardens coffee roaster Monjava since the beginning. If caffeine’s off your list, go for a cold-pressed juice, house-made smoothie or milkshake.
