The Wheatsheaf Hotel

Sun-bleached and comfortable, the Wheatsheaf Hotel looks like it’s been sitting in Adelaide’s inner west for 100 years. It has.

Co-publicans Jade Flavell, Liz O'Dea and Emily Trott (who passed away in 2016) took over the historic pub in 2003, inspired by bars in Europe and the US. You won’t find cocktails, cruisers or cans at the Wheaty, nor taps locked up by the major breweries.

Instead, there are craft beers from around the world, wines from smaller producers and uncommon whiskies. Behind the open doors of a lazy local pub, the staff prides itself on its knowledge, hospitality and open-mindedness. It’s an environment in which anyone will feel comfortable trying something new.

In 2014 the crew set up an on-site brewery for its own creations (such as smoked chipotle IPA; ice coffee White Stout; or anchovy-infused Gose, a German beer style from the town of Goslar) and collaborations with some of the world’s finest brewers. There’s no kitchen, but food trucks sit outside four nights a week.

As well as being a key venue in Adelaide’s local music scene, the Wheaty’s a meeting point for book clubbers, Morris dancers, knitters, roller-derby parties and a ukulele orchestra. With the atmosphere and produce on offer, it’s little wonder why. Head in and raise your glass to 100 more years.
