After successfully operating Cru Bar + Cellar for over a decade, Tony Harper, Sally McGregor and Graham Sutherland decided to open their second venue, Sixes and Sevens, a couple of blocks away in a quintessential Queensland cottage. With a passion for the James Street precinct, they were more than happy to give folk another reason to visit.

Their plan was to create a space where punters would settle in for the long haul – and they’ve nailed it. The tiered patio is decked out with astroturf, benches and ample shade for year-round outdoor drinking.

The two busy bars inside serve a small, curated list of beers; Australian brews such as Little Creatures' Rogers Ale, Mountain Goat’s Hightail Ale and Endeavour Pale Ale make up the list, and mojitos and a fruity Pimms come by the pitcher.

The food is booze-friendly fare – fried, salty and designed for sharing. Try the deep-fried mac ’n’ cheese balls bursting with liquefied cheese; gravy-laden fries; and pork and fennel sausage rolls.
