Design plus coffee: that’s what you get at TONIC Espresso + Bar, opened by architect Matt Riley next to his firm TONIC Design.

The converted garage is equal parts functional, quirky and cool. Well-hidden and espousing a raw industrial decor of exposed brick and stools adorned with stencil art, there’s every reason to seek out this place for your next coffee.

It’s TONIC’s house blend that draws in the morning crowd. Roasted by West End’s The Coffee Roaster, it’s a solid all-rounder of bold chocolate and toasty caramel notes, best served as a white but just as enjoyable sans milk. Teas supplied by T Totaler make for a happy coffee substitute – choose from organic English Breakfast or French Earl grey and mint.

TONIC’s short and punchy menu offers baked goodies to keep customers going until lunchtime; we’re talking English muffins, Italian-inspired toasties, banana bread and lemon yoghurt cake. Gluten-free options include pistachio, cranberry and white chocolate slices and citrus almond biscotti.
