The five mates who started Pineapple Express are united by their love of surf and healthy living.

It’s the first hospitality venture for the friends – each has their own day job – so they’ve handed the kitchen over to ex-Paleo Cafe chefs Regmond Gurney and Ryan Wegner.

The food philosophy is to recreate favourites, such as pancakes and pasta, as more nourishing versions. The result is protein pancakes; eggs Benedict; and zucchini pasta that don’t leave you wanting.

Usual health-food-cafe stalwarts, such as açaí bowls, juices and smoothies, are present, but it’s the CocoWhip soft serve that sets this place apart. It’s made with coconut water, but is somehow just as creamy as the dairy-laden original. When topped with a raw-chocolate Tim Tam with a Dzcleandz salted-caramel sauce, it’s hardly recognisable as a guilt-free dessert.

Living up to its name (not inspired by the movie), Pineapple Express also has plenty of options to go, including its Campos coffee, salads, wraps and Paleo treats.
