When Janey Guo bought The Single Guys Kenmore in 2016, there was some disquiet among the regulars. Since 2013 the cafe has been a hub for everyone: students from the neighbouring high school; retirees in for early coffee; and local business people talking strategy around the big communal table. There didn’t seem to be much room for improvement on its exceptional coffee and service.

Guo agreed, so she kept everything the regulars know and love pretty much the same. The coffee still comes from original owner Ben Graham’s Parallel Roasters, the interior is on the clean and sunny side with simple glass and wood, and the friendly staff makes everything easy and fun.

The menu works as well to takeaway as to dine-in, featuring American-tinged favourites such as Philly Steak Sandwich and Beef Brisket Po’ Boy, as well as lighter options such as mushrooms and kale on toast with a smoky mayo, Bircher muesli or fruit toast. While you’re sure of a good cup no matter how you like your coffee, they really think you should try the sweet and floral house filter. As the menu exclaims, "We love this stuff".
