Sichuan Bang Bang continues the legacy of Chinese cuisine on Wongabel Street, opening in 2012 in place of Eastern Jade – a Chinese takeaway joint that had been operating since the 1960s. But you won’t find any sweet and sour pork on the menu at Renata Roberts’ Sichuan-inspired establishment. The focus here is quality food in a relaxed setting.

Brisbane native Roberts learnt to cook in France before travelling the world and opening a slew of restaurants for other people. Before returning to Australia she spent time in China where she developed a love for Sichuan cuisine – which, incidentally, dates back to the 16th century, making it one of the oldest cuisines in the world.

It’s also one of the spiciest, and Bang Bang pulls no punches. A loyal crowd drops by for their fix of mapo doufu (chilli tofu), Sichuan Crispy Fried Chicken and Ho Fan Beef. Overcome the spicy kicks with the house Baijiu Rice whisky or a crisp Tsingtao beer.

If it’s too busy, try Roberts’ other enterprise next door, Pizzeria Violeta.
