Look for the crowd on busy Given Terrace. Behind it, you’ll find Anouk. An immediate hit when it opened in 2007, its aura hasn't dimmed since.

The charming cafe is the work of long-time hospitality figure Justine Whelan (ex-Gunshop Cafe and Champ Kitchen and Bar), and Anouk may well be her best creation yet.

Anouk’s chefs are hired for their points of difference – be it traditional Indian cuisine training or Hungarian home-style cooking – and once in the kitchen, these varied backgrounds come to the fore.

The result is an ever-changing, always surprising menu that's near impossible to choose from. Both breakfast and lunch are served all day, but deviate from the bacon and eggs standard and try a cleansing, spiced chicken pho for breakfast, or perhaps some maple toasted four seed granola for lunch.

The Merlo coffee is overseen by barista Harry, who is also Whelan’s son. If you’re looking for something refreshing and fruity, opt for the Muddled Fruit and Fizz, a tangy mix of lime, mint and ginger.
