A sense of community has informed Plum Tucker since 2014, when the neighbours helped owners Matt Carnell and Kate Lyons paint the walls prior to opening. They’ve kept that spirit alive by making Plum Tucker everything-friendly, be it children, dogs, vegetarians, vegans, and the gluten- or lactose-intolerant. The build-your-own breakfast will satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.

Plum Tucker bustles on weekends, and the intimate covered courtyard fills early. By night, the venue caters for private events. Locals love the cafe so much that many of them have ended up on staff. A kindergarten teacher drops by weekly for story time, and the bright upstairs area sports a kids’ corner.

The menu changes seasonally, but the avocado and haloumi on sourdough is a perennial favourite. Look out for fusion dishes such as the apple-kimchi pancakes, which are inspired by Lyons’ love of Asian cuisine. The duo is passionate about ethical eating and sources eggs, meat and milk from free-range and organic farmers.

The caffeine comes from Wolff Coffee Roasters. For the sweet-toothed, cakes and muffins are baked in-house, and neighbouring chocolatier Couverture & Co. custom-makes the drinking chocolate.
