Supernormal, the sequel to Andrew McConnell’s Melbourne restaurant of the same name, has finally arrived in Brisbane. And while sibling venue Bar Miette opened weeks in advance, Supernormal is the one Queensland diners had been eagerly awaiting for almost two years.

Drawing inspiration from Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul and Hong Kong, the menu shares DNA with the Melbourne original (a raw bar, dumplings, shared mains) and includes Supernormal signatures such as the half crispy duck and those lobster rolls. But the offering is no way a carbon copy of its southern counterpart, and is led by Southeast Queensland’s produce and climate.

Then there’s the venue itself, which is a drastic departure. From the green terrazzo floor and carved timber bar (designed to evoke tropical trees), everything about the ACME-designed space nods to its riverside location as well as Queensland’s natural beauty. Floor-to-ceiling windows and facetted mirrors offer views of the Story Bridge to every seat in the house.
