Rex Burdon and his partner Annette Lodewikus founded Nonesuch Distillery in 2015 on their serene farm near Sorell, 25 minutes east of Hobart. Burdon is a devoted gin distiller, but when his son Chris joined the business, he brought with him a passion for whisky. Soon enough, helped along by Tasmanian whisky luminaries like Bill Lark, Nonesuch started laying down small quantities of single malt.

The first Nonesuch Single Malt Whisky was released in 2018. Not long after that, Chris Burdon introduced a new style of whisky to Tasmania with his Nonesuch Triple Grain Whisky. The recipe for this unique take on American-style bourbon whiskey was passed to Burdon from Lark, and in using a proprietary blend of corn, rye and barley, it’s become one of the few examples of its type in Tasmania.

Nonesuch Distillery will please allcomers. The gins are among Tasmania’s best, and the distillery is also renowned for its Sloe Gin and Sloe Malt, the latter a completely original take on the style using malt spirit intended for whisky. Visitors to Nonesuch Distillery are welcome but call ahead to arrange a tour to this small, family-owned operation.
