A collaboration between former SAD Cafe owner Dom Ossa and barista Nick Suggitt, this purpose-built timber-frame shed in Kangarilla feels more like your mate’s back porch than a commercial coffee-roasting operation.

It is, though – complete with state-of-the-art equipment. It’s turning out some of the best ethically traded coffee in the country.

The experience at Dawn Patrol is much like wine tasting. Any number of fresh roasts are available for sampling and there’s a strong focus on education, albeit in a relaxed manner.

Suggitt is obsessed with espresso, Ossa prefers filter. Each Sunday you’ll find the boys stationed behind their weapons of choice, explaining their processes and discussing flavour and origin. They’ll also discuss Irish musician Glen Hansard, surfing, music docos and anything else that interests them.

Wrap your hands around a fresh brew, throw some wax on the stereo, slump into a worn-in lounge and – if you’re lucky – have a small dog fall asleep on your lap.

Dawn Patrol is equal parts coffee shop, cellar door and classroom. It’s a concept store in the truest sense, communicating the company’s ethos in the most sincere way.
