The appeal of FME Apparel is in the details. If you’re looking for a quick purchase after work, keep walking. This is an experience that takes time.

The womenswear store makes up one third of collaborative retail space Small Scale, which it shares with Trunk and Orderly and Post Sole Studio. Owner Maddy Maeve officially launched it in 2013 after a successful stint of selling dip-dyed dresses at the Camberwell Markets.

Her self-made brand’s style is slick and sophisticated. Cosy turtleneck jumpers, cropped pants and loose-fitting dresses adorn the walls. Maeve prides herself on sourcing high quality materials and fabrics. Her passion for sustainable and stylish fashion means that the garments are not only made to order; they’re made to last.

Each season, FME sells a garment created by Women Weave, an Indian not-for-profit organisation which sources skilled women from rural areas to hand-spin organic cottons. Most of the displayed garments are for comparing sizes, not purchasing on the spot. Your clothes may take a week or two to arrive, but it’s worth the wait.
