Melbourne’s busiest bushwalk is now walkable again.
The 1000 Steps walk – in the lush, dense forest of Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges – was forced to close last June after a storm caused severe damage to the track and surrounding national park.
It required a gargantuan clean-up effort. Upwards of 150 trees were uprooted and fell across and around the track during the storm, while branches were sprawled all over.

SIGN UPBut the walk – popular among energetic day-trippers – was officially reopened by environment and climate change minister Lily D’Ambrosio at an event on Monday.
It forms part of the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk. Originally made from the trunks of tree ferns (but since replaced by more permanent concrete steps), the walk pays tribute to the Golden Staircase, 2000 steps cut by Australian soldiers on the Kokoda Track.
