Melbourne’s not short on great outdoor swimming pools. But after an extensive 18-month redevelopment, Northcote Aquatic & Recreation Centre (affectionately dubbed “Narc” by locals) might be your new summer destination.
The “state of the art” centre on Victoria Road reopened on Monday November 13 with a 10-lane, 50-metre heated outdoor pool and a “nature-based splash pad” – a water play area for little ones. Indoor features include an eight-lane, 25-metre heated pool; a learn-to-swim pool for all ages; a warm water pool with an integrated spa; an aquatic play area with water slides; and steam and sauna facilities.
New fitness and wellness facilities – overlooking the outdoor pool from level two – include multipurpose spaces for group fitness classes and reformer Pilates, an 800-square-metre gym, and consulting rooms for physios.

SIGN UPThe new centre – which was designed by Warren & Mahoney Architects Australia and built by Kane Constructions – has a six-star Green Star design rating (the highest rating possible in the Green Building Council of Australia’s sustainability rating system).
“This stunning new sustainable facility has been built fit-for-purpose so everyone can feel welcome and included,” Darebin mayor Julie Williams said in a statement. “Whether you are young or old, living with disability or doing rehabilitation programs, this facility is for you.
The centre is run by Clublinks, which also operates Narrandjeri Stadium, Darebin Community Sports Stadium, Bundoora Park Public Golf Course and Northcote Public Golf Course, in partnership with the City of Darebin.
“Through innovative and inclusive programming and activities, we will support diverse groups from across the community to access programs and services,” Clublinks CEO Anthony Lawrence said in a statement. “The team is committed to creating a vibrant, dynamic and diverse community hub and we can’t wait to welcome everyone to Narc in November.”
