In late 2019, we shared the news that a multimillion-dollar digital art gallery – The Lume – was set to open in Melbourne this year.
The launch had to be postponed because of Covid-19, but today a new opening date (and location) was finally announced. The gallery will take up permanent residence at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in autumn 2021.
The Lume won’t show original masterpieces, though. Rather, 150 state-of-the-art projectors will beam artworks across the 3000-square-metre space. And visitors will be able to walk among them as dramatic soundtracks play and aromas are piped into the gallery.

SIGN UPThe first experience will be centred around the works of Vincent van Gogh (a smaller version of the show hit Sydney this year). With a combination of sights, sound and smells, visitors will be transported to the Netherlands, Paris and other French cities where his masterpieces came to life.
Behind the new gallery is Melbourne-based company Grande Experiences, which operates the permanent Museo Leonardo da Vinci in Rome. Its many travelling exhibitions celebrate the work of Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh and the French Impressionists.
The Lume is due to open at the Melbourne Convention Exhibition Centre in autumn 2021. Tickets will go on sale in early 2021. Sign up for early access here.
