I see a little bit of myself in Vincent van Gogh. Not the unparalleled artistic prowess, obviously. Or the ear thing. We have somewhat similar colouring – red hair, red beard.

But you don’t have to naturally look anything like the post-impressionist painter for a chance to win a VIP pass to an anticipated, soon-to-open experience centred on his works. You just need to snap a re-creation of any of his iconic self-portraits.

Van Gogh will be the inaugural experience at The Lume Melbourne, a permanent, multi-sensory digital art gallery at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. It’s slated to open in September, and entries for the look-a-like competition are open now.

“The more creative the entries, the better,” The Lume Melbourne’s team says. Restricted only by your imagination, use this locked-down time to come up with something out of the box. Like the above-pictured pup, which looks straight out of the 19th century.

To enter, visit The Lume Melbourne’s website, upload your self-portrait-channelling selfie and write 25 words or less about how the painting it is based on inspired you. There’ll be 10 winners, and each will get a VIP Access Package, which includes a double pass to Van Gogh, “front-of-the-line” access, two van Gogh-inspired face masks and a program.

Instead of showing original masterpieces, The Lume Melbourne will use state-of-the-art projectors to beam artworks across the 3000-square-metre space – from floor to ceiling. Visitors can walk among them as dramatic soundtracks play and aromas are piped into the gallery, which will be a soaring four storeys tall.

Expect to see more than 3000 reimagined paintings, sketches, letters, photos and floral works. Be enveloped by Van Gogh’s iconic Starry Night, step into a mirrored infinity room filled with hundreds of sunflowers and experience a life-size recreation of the artist’s Bedroom in Arles. There’ll also be an on-site eatery, Terrace Cafe 1888, inspired by French cafe culture and with a nod to Van Gogh’s Dutch heritage.

Enter the competition online. The Lume Melbourne is slated to open at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on September 1. Tickets for Van Gogh are on sale now; prices start at $39 for adults and it’s free for children under four.
