Small Axe Kitchen
THE LATEST
Small Axe Kitchen and its sibling venue Small Axe Deli, just a few blocks away, closed their doors on February 14. “We signed the lease on the cafe almost 10 years ago and we’ve had the deli for almost six years now, and the last four or five years have been really challenging,” co-owner Kirstyn Tait tells Broadsheet. “The last 12 to 18 months have probably been the most difficult yet. Treading water has gone from just keeping our heads above the water to starting to sink.
“We’ve had this outpouring from our little community here in Brunswick, and people coming with flowers, crying, and starting to share their small stories and moments that have meant a lot to them – from first dates that have turned into marriages to all of these amazing things.
“So we’re feeling really sad that we’re ending this era and saying goodbye to this little community for now.”
Features
Adam Pruckner has lived and worked in Brunswick most of his life. So when the former Code Black chef decided to strike out on his own, opening on Sydney Road was a foregone conclusion. Small Axe was founded with the help of his partner, Kirstyn Tait, and old mate Jas Singh.
The homey cafe features both open-air seating and reassuring, cosy corners. The 100-year-old building has a modern industrial feel; with an espresso bar, street-side dining and internal laneways.
In line with Pruckner's heritage and a honeymoon trip he and Tait took to Sicily, the menu is largely inspired by Italy. The breakfast pasta, for example, is maccaruni topped with cured pork cheek, peas, mint, salted ricotta and a slow-cooked egg. Other favourites include Sicilian meatballs with slow cooked egg and pecorino on toast; chargrilled sardines; and a smoked eggplant salad.
There’s also a range of Italian and Australian wines. Coffee is a seasonal blend from Code Black.
