When Canals Seafood closed in 2017 it left a pronounced gap in Nicholson Village. The Fishmonger’s Son, which opened in the old premises soon after, is a worthy successor.

Anthony Yotis (who cowns the shop with his wife Laura) is the son of fishmonger Konstantinos Yotis, who presided over a well-loved seafood stall at Footscray’s wholesale market for more than 40 years. Yotis has brought that expertise to this shop and sells Pacific oysters, to ocean trout, to prawns and swordfish sold by the cutlet.

But it’s more than just a seafood shop. There’s a curated line-up of deli items and pantry staples – such as pasta, olive oils, salts, sauces and rice – for those who like to cook classic seafood dishes such as paella or spaghetti with clams.

Be sure to head in for your shop around lunchtime: The Fishmonger’s Son serves house-made rolls and paninis every day. Options include prawn cocktail-stuffed rolls, lobster rolls and classic salmon bagels. There’s also a range of ready-to-eat smoked fish.

And on Thursdays and Fridays, you can grab a fresh nigiri and sashimi box for takeaway, prepared by the expert in-house sashimi chef. Get in early though – these packs often sell out before lunchtime.
