Features

Found Sound is a musical curiosity shop in Carlton – a wood-panelled cave stacked to the roof with rare and sought-after equipment from the top-of-the-line to the slightly odd. Many years ago this shop housed scientific curio store Wunderkammer, and something of that weird, lost-and-found spirit lives on in Found Sound.

Owner Lewis Boyes had worked at the Swop Shop down the road for 18 years and as a touring musician for Adalita and Jen Cloher among others. When he opened in mid 2014, Boyes pulled in the huge amount of equipment he owned all over town, dispersed around various studios and rehearsal spaces, to fill the shop – and he continues to draw on his connections in the local scene.

Don’t come here for a starter guitar. Come for the kind of selection of vintage guitars, synths and recording gear that makes music nerds shiver with glee. Boyes also spends an awful lot of time individually labeling each piece with idiosyncratic details and enthusiastic endorsements.

Being a second-hand operation, Found Sound also buys used equipment and, to pre-approved customers, hires out a selection of its stock.
