Brunswick Street bar and restaurant China Bar has been hit with a $9913 fine, for breaching strict new coronavirus measures that restrict the operation of “non-essential” services, the ABC reports.

On Saturday night Victoria Police found alcohol being served to patrons inside the venue, Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said in press conference on Tuesday, though he did not name the venue. He said the venue “had six staff there present, there were two people there who were being served alcohol, and it was being treated as open for business totally.”

When the staff was questioned, “They weren’t cooperative, they refused to say how long they had been open, and they refused to state why they were open”.

A total of 7010 checks have been conducted since March 21.

“It’s the first time we’ve issued an infringement, but it won’t be the last,” Patton said. “We know that that is a significant fine, especially in these times when businesses are struggling, but people must comply with these restrictions.”

He went on to remind that individuals found in breach of the restrictions are now up for $1652 on-the-spot fines.
