As the latest Omicron subvariants cause Covid cases to surge, the Victorian Government has made a change to testing and isolation requirements for those who have recovered from Covid-19.

If you’re re-exposed to a positive case after your isolation period ends, you’re now only exempt from testing and isolating for four weeks – down from the previous 12 weeks.

The new rule comes into effect from 11.59pm tonight. And it’s in line with advice from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee that suggests the newly emerging Covid-19 subvariants can bypass the immunity a recent infection might’ve given you.

“As we’re seeing across the globe and around Australia, winter means more time inside where Covid-19 and the flu can spread,” said health minister Mary-Anne Thomas in a statement. “It also means our nurses, ambos and doctors have never worked harder.”

While no other rule changes were announced, Thomas did offer some recommendations and reminders: “Wearing a mask, getting up-to-date with your vaccinations and ensuring indoor areas are well ventilated are small but effective steps Victorians and businesses can take to manage their own Covid-19 risk this winter.”
