Appearing at a press conference this morning, Premier Daniel Andrews announced a new round of coronavirus restrictions for metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, effective from 1pm today. The changes come after 16 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the northern Victorian town of Shepparton.
From 1pm today until 11.59pm on September 2:
• Regional Victoria will return to lockdown. There will only be five valid reasons to leave home: for essential food and supplies, to exercise for no more than two hours within five kilometres of home, for care or caregiving, authorised work or education, and to get vaccinated at the nearest location.

SIGN UP• Every childcare centre in the state will close, except to vulnerable children and children of authorised workers. A permit system will apply, and “further details will be available soon”. It’s the same process as last year, Andrews said.
The tightened restrictions come after the state recorded 77 new locally acquired cases – the third day in a row with upwards of 50 cases. Of today’s local cases, 22 were in isolation for the duration of their infectious period and 48 are linked to known outbreaks.
