Parts of north-east Melbourne have just been lashed by one hell of a hailstorm – after what was a delightfully sunny, almost spring-like morning.

This writer’s Northcote house was all shook up for at least 10 minutes while cherry-sized hailstones battered down, with a healthy dose of thunder and lightning.

Others on Twitter saw similar scenes in the northern suburbs of Mickleham and Craigieburn.

This was the calm after the storm.

It was felt as far out as the Mornington Peninsula.

And another Twitter user put it perfectly: “Getting smashed by hail. Sounds like a Slipknot concert!”
