The Victorian government has unveiled initial plans for a new suburb in North Melbourne, which could be home to up to 15,000 residents by 2050.
Called the Arden precinct, the inner-north-west hub will occupy 50 hectares of “underutilised industrial land” between Macaulay Road, Dryburgh Street and Moonee Ponds Creek.
It will be centred around the new Arden train station (on the corner of Arden and Laurens Streets), which is due for completion by 2025 as part of the $11 billion Metro Tunnel Project.

SIGN UPThe initial plans feature a sprawling gathering space around the train station (similar to Federation Square, according to a press release); the lengthening of Queensberry and Fogarty Streets to allow for “high-street-style” shopping strips; and new transport and cycling links to better connect the inner north-west to the rest of the city.
The area will eventually be serviced by three train stations, with the Metro Tunnel providing access to the city, Parkville and the western suburbs. And the project is expected to create up to 34,000 jobs over the next 30 years.
Input from the community in 2016 helped shape the vision for the Arden precinct. So, while these newly announced plans will serve as a blueprint, the government has again sought public feedback before construction gets underway.
