The City of Melbourne has today released new plans – and renders – for the first major stage of its transformative $300 million Greenline project.
It includes more than 450 metres of new boardwalks and paths within the Birrarung Marr precinct – part of a greater plan to completely greenify the north bank of the Yarra with a four-kilometre-long, six-metre-wide promenade.
“The Greenline project will transform, revitalise and reimagine the north bank of the Yarra River – with a new boardwalk, paths and lush greenery along Birrarung Marr,” said Lord Mayor Sally Capp in a statement.

The “game-changing” project’s aim is to draw more people to the waterfront with an uninterrupted journey from the MCG to Docklands. With a plan likened to that of NYC’s High Line, it’s one of the largest developments Melbourne has undergone since Southbank Promenade was completed in 1990 and Fed Square opened in 2002.
Capp added: “Now we want to hear what the community has to say on the future of this special site.” Community consultation opens online on August 2 and runs for six weeks.
Works along the river edge in Birrarung Marr are expected to commence by mid-2023.
