South-siders might have noticed something unusual on the grass at Prahran Square, a green space just off Chapel Street. But despite months of feeling like we’re in the Upside Down, they’re not crop circles – nor is this the setting for a supersized game of Connect 4.

Instead – to be super clear about what a 1.5-metre distance looks like – the City of Stonnington has painted a series of “social circles” on the grass. The council was inspired by a similar initiative in New York City earlier this year.

It comes after lockdown restrictions were further eased in Melbourne over the weekend. Now, up to five people – from no more than two households – may gather in a public space. (But all five people must remain within five kilometres of their homes.)
