Nothing says “Melbourne’s back” quite like trudging through beer-soaked carpet at the pub.
But the folks from Aussie brewery Coopers and creative agency The Royals are taking that euphoric, return-to-normality feeling to strange new heights.
They’re behind an unusual new mural in Fitzroy North, right near the Terminus Hotel. Stuck on the side of a building is a 5.5-metre-wide welcome mat that reads “Welcome back to the pub”, and has been soaked in Coopers Pale Ale.

SIGN UP“As an iconic Australian beer that’s been quenching the nation’s thirst for nearly 160 years, Coopers [has] seen it all – riding through [the] Great Depression, world wars and now Covid,” Sebastian Vizor, executive creative director at The Royals, said in a statement.
“So, who better suited to lead the charge and celebrate the world’s longest locked-down city finally [coming out of lockdown] by welcoming us back to the pubs?’
If – on the off chance – you’ve missed the smell of a front-bar carpet sloshed with beer, give the mural a … whiff? Or just strike up a conversation about how you could’ve put the beer to better use.
