Even before Melbourne descended into lockdown 6.0, florist Emily-Rose Hill – behind Collingwood flower boutique Rose Studios, which opened in late 2019 – was looking for a way to thank locals for supporting her through a year that dealt blow after blow.
As with anyone working in industries reliant on perishable products, cancelled events meant cancelled orders, which really hit small businesses.
“After multiple circumstances with the odds not in our favour, a shop full of fresh flowers and a closed door, we reached out to our community to share our page or – if [they were] able to – buy a bunch,” Hill tells Broadsheet. “Fortunately, we were able to move our stock and create some beautiful arrangements for some lovely people.”

In very wholesome news, Hill is giving away 100 bunches of beautifully bulbous chincherinchee, leaving them in a pile outside her Johnston Street studio on Saturday.
So, as we enter out first non-locked-down weekend in what feels like an eternity, Hill says, “We hope the flowers give each individual a little pick-me-up”.
The flowers will be placed outside Rose Studios – 17 Johnston Street, Collingwood – at 10am on Saturday October 23. There’s a limit of one per person.
