Premier Daniel Andrews has announced a harsh new penalty for those breaching coronavirus restrictions.
Anyone caught flouting self-isolation rules now faces a $4957 fine, which Andrews says is “the largest on-the-spot fine for an individual on the statute books of the state of Victoria”. “[For] particularly selfish behaviour, like for instance, going to work when you had the virus”, the maximum penalty is $20,000.
It comes after a series of 3000 random doorknocks, in which almost a third of self-isolators couldn't be located. “[In] more than 800 of those homes, the person who should have been isolating could not be found. That is completely unacceptable,” Andrews said.

SIGN UP“Every single positive case will be door-knocked multiple times – random and repeated door-knocks,” he said.
The police already have the right to issue a $1652 on-the-spot fine to anyone caught breaking the law, and a $200 fine to those not wearing a face mask or covering when leaving home.
