True North

Head to the top of Sydney Road and you’ll hit True North. Built by mates, for mates, the Coburg cafe/bar has become a local favourite for brunch, dinner and drinks.

Nadia Camus and Brett O’Riley opened True North in 2013, renovating an old hair salon with friends. Filled with prints, posters and figurines from around the world, the space feels like a big living room – ideal for relaxing with groups. There’s a dog-friendly “beer ghetto” out back for those with four-legged mates.

Depending on when you drop in, you’ll find different food coming from the kitchen. By day there’s American/Mexican fare – bagels, a reuben, huevos rancheros – before the “Cheeseburger Picnic” takes over after 5pm. That’s a burger menu named after an episode of cult TV show Trailer Park Boys. Keep your eye on social media for regular “Pie or Die” nights, where punters pair Camus’ sweet homemade pies to the bar’s booze menu. Vegan and gluten free options are always available.

Local beers and seasonal cocktails dominate the alcohol menu. Try the True North margarita, made with pineapple and jalapeño fresca and a paprika salt rim, or go for the Spiked Lemmy: house lemonade with your choice of liqueur. Add some homemade hot sauce if you dare.

Coffee is from Coffee Supreme. The fizzy cold brew is worth a go, or for those who prefer their joe old school, there’s bottomless filter for $5.
