You don’t have to travel to Europe to get your hands on authentic mid-century furniture – just find Grandfather’s Axe in Collingwood. This store imports vintage pieces directly from the continent, to be restored and sold to new owners.

Inside you’ll find an assortment of original pieces designed by Hans Olsen, Børge Mogensen, Hans Wegner and more, along with plenty of locally sourced pieces. From dining chairs to sideboards, the influence of Danish design is clear, and many of the pieces exemplify Scandinavia’s appreciation for simplistic functionality. The same can be said of the sizeable range of homewares, ceramics and gifts also on offer.

Husband-and-wife team, founder Ed Klein and Tracey Grimson, source many of their pieces from Europe. Some arrive in near-perfect condition, while others are sent to the backroom workshop for repair or even a full re-upholstering. The staff takes great care to restore the latter without compromising the work of the designer.

Though the business of importing and restoring furniture can be a costly one, prices here are reasonable – competitive even. And if you’re looking for a statement piece that not only holds its value, but increases it, you’ve come to the right place.
