Frédéric is a refined contemporary French restaurant. Fred’s bar is its casual all-day offshoot. The two venues are stylish and intimate, each with their own distinct feel.

It’s owned by siblings Antoine, Edouard and Nathalie Reymond – whose father is the famed French-Australian chef Jacques Reymond. It’s a departure from their other venues, the more formal Bistro Gitan and L’Hotel Gitan – especially Fred’s Bar. Those places took more inspiration from classic French cooking techniques and service, whereas Fred’s is more Australian in feel.

You’ll find fresh croissants and other pastries from Ned’s Bake just a few streets away, plus croque monsieurs, smoked salmon bagels and brioche buns from 7.30am. Later there are charcuterie and cheese boards, pate, quiche, pies, baguettes and steaks (which are all under $30, except for one $42 eye fillet). And during happy hour, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, there are $2 oysters.
