You could say it’s the winter of light in Melbourne.
It’s at the centre (and in the name) of ACMI’s major, hypnotic new exhibition, Light: Works From Tate’s Collection. UK artist and master of light Bruce Munro – perhaps best known for his epic Field of Light installation at Uluru – will this weekend unveil his first Australian museum exhibition at Heide. And a raft of luminous festivals are happening in regional Victoria over coming weeks.
But tonight is the (Covid-delayed) Australian debut of Lightscape, which has completely transformed Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens with larger-than-life light installations. They’re illuminating a 1.8-kilometre stretch of the riverside gardens like never before.

SIGN UPBroadsheet photographer Arianna Leggiero was there last night to catch a preview of all the after-dark action before its official opening – including a field of colourful, lustrous flowers, a glowing, meandering tunnel, and dramatically lit tree canopies.
Lightscape runs from June 24 to August 7 at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens. Tickets start from $32 and are available online.
