After being shuttered for months, Melbourne’s sibling independent film houses Lido in Hawthorn and Cameo in Belgrave have announced their outdoor cinemas are set to reopen on Thursday October 26, in line with the Victorian government’s road map out of lockdown.

Classic in Elsternwick, meanwhile, will reopen its rooftop cinema after some screen maintenance, but its adjoining bar is slated to reopen on October 26.

On opening night, catch a gala screening of Zola, based on a 2015 Twitter thread about a 48-hour road trip featuring a waitress, a sex worker and a pimp. Also on the program: the latest from Marvel Studios, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings; the Ryan Reynolds-led action-comedy Free Guy, also starring Jodie Comer and Taika Waititi; and Nitram, a dramatic telling of the story behind the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, featuring Caleb Landry Jones (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Judy Davis (The Dressmaker) and Essie Davis (The Babadook).

At each venue – Lido on the Roof and Cameo Outdoor Cinema – coronavirus restrictions will be in place. Masks will be required, and you can expect socially distanced seating, reduced capacities and contactless payments only.

But you’ll once again be able to pull up a beanbag or deckchair and catch a new release under the stars.

Tickets are on sale now for the first two weeks of sessions at Lido, and Cameo’s outdoor cinemas.
