“Welcome to the pleasure-dome,” reads a neon sign at Colour.

It’s hard to believe the late-night good times have only been rolling at the Carlton nightclub and live music venue since 2019. But it’s the end of the road.

“What a wild three-and-a-bit years it’s been,” the team wrote on Instagram last night, in a post announcing that the Queensberry Street music hub is closing. “Unfortunately, due to the ever-increasing financial pressures in our industry, the operation of our venue has become unviable, and Colour will be closing its doors at the end of 2022.”

“We built the club … as a means to continue to support the amazing local dance and live music community, and we are proud to have played a small role in filling that space,” the post goes on. “It’s been incredible to work with such an amazing amount of new talent, and to watch many of our peers grow into the amazing artists they are today.

Colour is in an 1835-built former church that, over the course of its life, has also been home to the notorious ’90s S&M club Hellfire and the short-lived club Yours & Mine. In 2019, it was resurrected as Colour, under the former owners of longstanding Swanston Street nightclub Lounge and the team behind Something Unlimited festival.

The venue has an industry-best Funktion-One sound system and an orange bandroom upstairs, adding a live music element to the previously dance-music-oriented venue. Despite lockdowns, it became a vital pillar of the local scene, with a stacked program of house and techno DJs and a focus on creating an inclusive performance space, but the roster isn’t boxed in to any one genre. The club also has a sought-after 24-hour licence.

“We thank all the punters, our amazing staff, our family and our friends from the bottom of our hearts for all of your support, especially during the pandemic,” the team also wrote. “We wouldn’t have made it this far without you.”

“We do have a month-and-a-half left of some very special events and guests, so keep an eye out for that – let’s send it out in style!”

Colour is closing at the end of the year.
